What : an impressive ancient tomb, the larger ever
found in Greece, by two sphinxes and freco walls
Where: Northeast Macedonian region
When : Early Hellenistic era, dated by archaeologists to 300-325 BC,
A vast ancient tomb in Greece, distinguished by two sphinxes and fresco-ed walls, has been unearthed by the archaeologists and is dating to 300-325 BC, as it is announced officially in Greece
Is it Alexander’s tomb?
Although the discovery marks a significant discovery from the early Hellenistic era, on Alexander’s birthplace, the Culture Ministry spokesperson said there is no evidence yet to suggest a link to Alexander the Great, who died in 323 BC after an unprecedented military campaign through the Middle East, Asia and northeast Africa, or his family.
The official said the Amphipolis site, situated about 100 km northeast of Greece’s second-biggest city Thessaloniki, appeared to be the largest ancient tomb that has been discovered in Greece.
Archaeologists, who began excavating the site in 2012, expect to enter the tomb by the end of the month to determine out who was buried there.
“It looks like the tomb of a prominent Macedonian of that era,” said another culture ministry official, declining to be named. Alexander the Great died in Babylonia, in what is modern Iraq, and his actual burial place is not known.
Such an impressive grave
Archaeologists have found two sphinxes, thought to have guarded its entrance, a 4.5-metre-wide road leading into it, with walls on both sides covered by frescoes. It is circled by a 497-metre-long marble outer wall.
Experts believe A five meter tall lion sculpture, that has been previously discovered nearby once stood atop the tomb.
The Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras took the chance to be on place and have some shots on an occassionb, unique, may be, during all last years, that indeed makes Greeks proud “It is certain that we stand before a special and significant finding. The land of Macedonia continues to surprise us, revealing its unique treasures,” he stated to the Press.
But it is impressive, though , that noone can see this grave on these photos, without PM Samaras in them. Officialy, the photos release by the Ministry of Culture do not show the findings themselves, the sphinxes, the fresco, etc. Only a background of the PM
Greek Archaelogists, do really hope, that this is the grave of the Great Alexander, but they don’t dare to express their expectations, as to keep their credibility. Macedonia, since the Philippos, Alexander’s father reigning, up to the Roman era, has raised lots of great men, said to Aimilios Liatsos Radio show on Real fm, the well known Historian Kargakos
But according to the scripts of this period, referred to Alexander’s the Great death, so many history findings lead to the conclusion that Alexander was buried back on his birthplace, as is the golden crown chaplet, described to be placed on his head
